Visionary Thinking: Success does not come from within our comfort zone. We must look beyond what we do today and strive to do better. This starts with a vision. One of my favorite quotes is, “If you want to build a ship, do not hire people and assign tasks. Instead, get your team to long for the endless wonder of the sea.”
A team that is excited about the journey will make things happen that even you did not know were possible.
Empowerment: One of the worst mistakes that a leader can make is to think they are the smartest person in the room. If this is the case, then you are not leading people, you are directing. Innovative leaders surround themselves with experts and give them the power to do what is right. If the team is aligned on the vision, then those individuals are the best ones to make the day-to-day decisions that move the team forward.
Trust the team to do what is right and protect them when things go wrong.
Collaboration: The biggest delay in any initiative occurs when a task must be handed from one team to another. If the priorities of those teams are not aligned, then the tasks will sit in a queue while the clock ticks. More than anything else, this is what delays projects and releases. The solution is not to eliminate that different teams, or siloes as they are often referred to, but rather to get the teams working together. Break the habit of tossing work over the fence at others and then yelling at them to move faster. Partner with them. Share your priority lists. Find out what their roadblocks are.
It is amazing what can be accomplished simply by finding ways to work better with other teams.
Career Development: Every individual on the team is on a journey. Their current role is merely a step on that path. My job, as their leader, is to help them on that journey. I am not only trying to get the most from them while they are on this team, I am working with them to prepare them for their next role. Through coaching, mentoring, and career development assistance, I make sure that each team member has the skills to provide value to the organization now and in the future.
The highest performing employees are those that know I am positioning them for success in the future.

What is the problem that needs to be solved? That is the question I am always asking. Even when things are going well, I am looking for ways we can improve and be prepared for what comes next.
Faster. Cheaper. Better. In all my roles, that is what excites me.
